Drum Kit Sizes

Now Drum Kit Sizes can be very confusing if you are unsure about drums. Below are the 4 most Popular sizes that the Industry uses. Some companies and some manufacturers cant decide what the standard names for these configurations should be. Below is what we, at Drum Stop use. This is just because how, over time we have come to know them. Please be aware there is no correct or incorrect way to name drum kit configurations, and that is where the confusion comes from. That is why we have added an image for each size, so it is as clear as possible. If you are unsure remember everyone at Drum Stop can answer you questions regarding kit sizing, we are only a phone call away on 0114 247 2200.

If you look below all the configuration names we use start with a number, that number relates to the bass drum size in inches, after that you will see names like Fusion and Rock. this does NOT mean that those sizes are only suited to that style of music. It is just names that have developed over time. ( it would be much easier to have the names of kit sizes as say size 1 size 2 etc however this is how the majority of the drum industry has come to know the kits so we stick with it to try not to confuse you even more.) In the pictures below the snare drum is denoted always as the bottom left hand drum and in most cases in standard set ups is a 14 inch, the Square Drum at the top (middle) is the bass drum and the drums spread from left to right are the Toms.

Other Sizes and configurations are getting introduced all the time and so more names are introduced, if you look at most configurations they are based around one of the above sizes, what we mean by this is one of the above configurations with an added drum, be that an extra floor tom or extra high tom or one of the above sizes with a drum removed. See below for the variations.

The Above are basically one of the standard kit sizes with an added drum. Mapex made these sizes more common place and use them as standard kit configurations as a way to offer more value into their drum kits and it has worked wonders, as about 7 or 8 years ago most kits were just 5 pc and if you wanted to add an extra drum to your set up you would need to Special Order that drum and that could take upto 6 months. This still can be tha case for special order drums today. That is why we have so many ''standard'' kit configurations now so that there is a kit size for everyone off the shelf.

Kit sizes are not limited to what we have shown above there are lots more configurations however they would be based around one of the above with changes like larger 24 inch bass drums and configurations with less drums.
We have not listed all of them here as it would be more confusing and each kit we sell online will have noted in the description the size of drums that it comes with. Again if you are unsure please do call 0114 247 2200.
